Most of us are mocking the huge price tag on the Apple Watch Edition to secretly hide the disappointment of not being able to buy it. But while most of us sulk, a guy named Ronald (that’s all we know about him) has gone ahead and done something crazy to get his hands on the smartwatch. He launched a website featuring a thousand pixel billboard, and is selling each pixel space to practically anyone for $1. When all the pixels are bought, he will have earned $10,000, therefore making him eligible to buy the Apple Watch Edition. Crazy? Not really.
“This is for real,” he explains to CultOfMac. “Remember the first time you heard about Million Dollar Home Page? That’d never work they say! Or how about the first time someone told you about Wikipedia. An encyclopedia where anyone can write articles and edit? Get out! Well those stories and so many more came true. Today the reality is an Apple Watch Edition costs $10,000. So a whole website for just a watch? YUP.”
Interestingly, his crowdfunding website called tenthousanddollarhomepage.com has already got a lot of backers helping him get to the gold-plated Apple Watch. All tech websites including Gizmodo, The Verge, Engadget and MacRumors have put in their little bit. In a neat advertising gimmick, we even saw chief rival Pebble making a small donation and taking the centre spot on the pixel wall.
Whether this is absolute low level, or rather unique we will let you decide. If he manages to collect $10,000 for the Apple Watch Edition he will ‘post pictures’ of it, for users to proudly testify that they were a part of ‘Internet history’. If you’re up for charity, head over to his website for more details.
